Topsy the Elephant was publicly executed in Coney Island, NY in 1903. She was fed carrots laced with 460 grams of cyanide, given copper laced sandals connected to AC lines, sending 6,600 volts of electricity through her body, and was also strangled with two steam-powered ropes around her neck for 10 minutes. The execution was heavily attended by the press and there was estimated to be about 1,500 spectators. Topsyβs tragic death emphasizes the cruelty of entertainmentβs past and present.
