PARLOR TRICK PRINT EXCHANGE
2025 : ESCAPE
This exchange was open and limited to 50 U.S. Printmakers who created all forms of hand-pulled prints from etchings to screen print to linocuts.
The theme for 2025 was “Escape.”
To escape is to break free of confinements, to evade undesirable situations, a distraction from reality….what does escape mean to you? Do you use art as a means of escape? What is they key that will help you break free?
This print exchange is made possible by a DLCA Art Fund Grant from Staten Island Arts, with public funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

Slip Point
Serigraph, 8 color
Escape isn’t dramatic here. It’s quiet, inevitable, and in various states.

Nonsensical 無意味
Intaglio - Etching, Aquatint, à la poupée
For my print, I decided to use the theme of ‘escape’ to allow myself the chance to make a print that’s different from my usual work/themes. Since graduating with my MFA, I’ve felt pressure to constantly think about the next body of work I need to make. But this was a nice escape from that mindset to create something strange and nonsensical.

Escape
Etching with Aquatint
I used my daughter as a reference. Based on a photo I took a few years ago in a castle (Bolt Castle). The castle was built for love but was never finished while they lived. Speaks of yearning, a private prison, death, trapped in a situation, etc.

Lucky Escape
Linocut on Japanese Mulberry Paper
This is the Kaneiji 5-story pagoda in Ueno Park, Tokyo. The peonies were from the gardens there. I was lucky to visit my son there at the end of April.

Let’s Dance
linocut/letterpress
5 Layers print using different printmaking techniques. The stripes of the flag bring to mind bars of a jail cell and the notion to dance as an escape. DANCE like nobody & everybody is watching. JUST DANCE! -

A Dreaded Sunny Day

Based on a pic my Dad took of us at a cemetery with the one way sign by the entrance. The sign and title reference “Cemetery Gates” by The Smiths. Must love dad jokes and sad bastard music!
